Earth Day 2023: Brands We Love that Love the Planet

April 22

Health and Wellness is a guiding pillar for us at Barkfield Road. Not only do we practice this for us and our furever friends, we practice this for our planet.

Using sustainable products with Earth-loving ingredient and material sourcing, we are able to feel great about what we are giving our pups. There are many brands we carry that uphold these standards of loving our Mother Earth, but let’s highlight three brands that lead the way!

FOOD: OPEN FARM

Open Farm’s love for our planet is shown in their ingredient sourcing and transparency, leading to quality food with a purpose.

With multiple fish options, the brand is strict about what fisheries they partner with to ensure they are following current Ocean Wise sustainability standards. These partnerships also guarantee safe fishing in regards to the marine environment and the ocean floor. In addition, whitefish used in recipes is caught in season to avoid over-fishing certain populations of fish in the area.

To make shopping with them even more satisfying, Open Farm provides Lower Carbon Options. All products have been examined by third-party independent organizations to determine which emit the least greenhouse gases. These include the turkey, chicken, and beef recipes of dry and wet foods.

CHEWS: EARTH ANIMAL

Earth Animal speaks to their commitment to sustainability through their name, but they also walk the walk.

1% of annual net sales is donated to non-profit organizations that protect our planet, choosing a different feature every quarter. In 2021, this valued over half a million dollars! The brand is currently certified plastic neutral, but they won’t stop there. By 2025, Earth Animal plans for 100% of their packaging to be recyclable, reusable, or compostable. As of this year, more than 50% reaches that goal! To spread this goal to other brands, they are involved in a task force that collaborates solutions to plastic packaging.

TOYS: WEST PAW

West Paw rules the recycling world when it comes to dog toys. In fact, they were the first pet product manufacturer to join the Pet Sustainability Coalition!

Ever-growing in their efforts, in 2020 19% of their toys were made of recycled materials. Committed to lessening their waste, this material is recycled from old, worn-out consumer toys and excess production material from their factory. As of the end of 2020, West Paw has also kept over 16 MILLION plastic bottles out of landfills. How?? They turn them into eco-friendly fiber and webbing to be used for plush toys, dog beds, and collars.

Next time you shop at Barkfield Road, consider trying one of these incredible brands that prioritize quality AND sustainability. The result will be a happy pup and a happy planet, what could be better?
